THUNDERSTORM INGREDIENTS
Enough water vapor must be available to form deep cloud and precipitation. Dewpoint is a common measure.
A lifted parcel must remain warmer and more buoyant than the surrounding air so vertical growth can continue.
A trigger starts the upward motion. Heating, fronts, convergence, terrain, drylines, and outflow boundaries can supply it.
CELL LIFE CYCLE
Strong updrafts dominate. The cloud grows vertically, but precipitation has not yet reached the surface.
Precipitation reaches the surface. Updrafts and downdrafts coexist, and hazards are at their greatest.
Downdrafts dominate and cut off the moisture supply. A weakening appearance does not mean the cell is safe.
AVIATION WEATHER
Present in every thunderstorm by definition.
Powerful vertical currents can exceed aircraft capability.
May occur inside the cloud and beyond the visible storm.
Strong descending air creates dangerous low-level wind shear.
Outflow can extend well ahead of the precipitation core.
Visibility falls while radar attenuation can hide what lies beyond.
BUILD A STORM AROUND THE WORLD
Select an action to add it. Select it again to remove it. Combine actions until moisture, instability, and lift are all sufficient.
Warm, humid tropical air is already primed. Supply an effective trigger without disrupting the other ingredients.

FREE THUNDERSTORM WEATHER PRACTICE
Combine moisture, instability, and lift to see why some environments produce little vertical development while others support thunderstorms. Experiment with interacting processes such as humid flow over mountains, then connect each lifecycle stage with the weather hazards pilots must avoid.
Thunderstorm formation requires sufficient water vapor, unstable air, and a lifting mechanism.
Follow a cell through towering cumulus, mature, and dissipating stages as updrafts and downdrafts change.
This conceptual trainer does not forecast convective initiation or severity. Use approved weather information and sound aeronautical decision-making.
