D: 30 NM

S: 120 KT

T: 15 MIN

DIVISION RULE Distance is always on top.
SELECTED EQUATION Distance = Speed × Time
PILOT QUICK BRIEFThree relationships, one unit check
Distance

Distance = GS × hours
or (GS × minutes) ÷ 60

Groundspeed

GS = distance ÷ hours
or (distance ÷ minutes) × 60

Time

Hours = distance ÷ GS
Minutes = (distance ÷ GS) × 60

TRAINING NOTE: Keep the units consistent. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour. The challenge uses exact-answer scenarios; no rounding is required.

Practice distance, groundspeed, and time calculations

Use the distance–speed–time memory triangle to select the correct equation, convert minutes to hours, validate the resulting units, and solve practical pilot scenarios.

Calculate groundspeed

Divide nautical miles by hours, or multiply distance by 60 and divide by elapsed minutes.

Calculate flight time

Divide distance by groundspeed for hours, then multiply by 60 when the answer is needed in minutes.

Calculate distance

Multiply groundspeed by time in hours, or multiply by minutes and divide by 60.
